"Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going."
-Rita Mae Brown
What is school like in Ontario?
- All students between the ages of six and sixteen must attend school.
- Learning occurs in ways that may differ from other countries. It may include things like: games, singing, music, drama, art, working in groups and students talking with other students.
- Students may leave the school for learning experiences outside of the school (museums, musical shows, farms etc.). These are all an important part of schooling.
- There will not be a lot of homework, especially in the younger grades. We believe that students work hard at school and are busy at night. We also believe that it is important that families have time to have fun together. Reading with your child is a wonderful way to support their learning and share time together. If there is homework, it will be practice only. No new lessons should ever happen at home.
- If you want your child to do extra work, there are lots of learning websites (including UG2GO, in the "More" section of this website) which you can access any time.
- Teachers want to talk to you. Please know that you can call the school and talk to them when you have a concern or a question.
- Report cards will come home three times in the year (one Progress Report without grades and two regular Report Cards- in November, February, and June). If you need help understanding it, please contact your child's teacher.
