ESL (English as a Second Language)support is an additional school service we provide to enable your children to succeed in the grade-level classroom. ESL teachers work with classroom teachers to help children develop English language skills and learning strategies which they will need to work successfully with the Ontario school curriculum.
What is the process?
Initially your child will be assessed to determine his/her ability to use English. All students are then assessed at regular intervals in all subject areas. Formal reports on student progress differ depending on the age of the learners. ESL learners might not receive letter grades in the very early stages of English language learning. In this case, teachers supply written comments. Even when letter grades are given, if you have questions, ask your child's teacher to clarify.
What does ESL support look like?
There is support outside of the classroom in small groups, and sometimes in class. Depending on your child's need and ESL teacher availability, they might see the teacher once a week, or several times a week.
